Due to an unfortunate bug in our mail reading program and a very full hard

today's digest were deleted. No, this is not another joke. If you don't see
your non-binary posting in today's digest, please resend. I think most of the

have it again too.

Hello. I am contemplating purchasing a Radius Rocket, an 040 NuBus board
running at 25 Mhz. The seller wants $800 for it. Is this a good price,
and more importantly, will I run into any compatibility problems? How is
the performance compared to a Centris 650? Thanks.

I just picked up a 4 megabyte .Z file, which expanded to a 9mb .tar file,
which I finally got unTar-ed. However, I have a problem. Now I have a
whole bunch of text files (several hundred) which are LF delimited instead
of CR delimited (problems with the .tar archive didn't allow me to
automatically unTar it, and so the LFs didn't get converted).
Is there a drag&drop util out there which I can drop a folder of files which
will read all TEXT format files and replace the LFs with CRs? Is there
something which will just allow me to select files from a standard S/F
dialog box and convert them?
please e-mail me direct, even with the auto-undigesting newsreader, it's
still hell finding what I want in this digest. (Guess that's what comes of
a popular distribution list.)

Subject: AT&T and USR Sportster modems?
Hi everyone,
There are a couple of new v.everything modems out now, that I haven't seen any
real test reviews for (sorry, bad grammar).
US Robotics has a Sportster line of external modems, and they have recently
cut their pricing to below $250 for their 14.4K Mac&Fax modem. Is this still
using their proprietary chipset, or is it a "stripped-down" version of what
They put in their Courier line?
AT&T has their DataPort modems, using their own chipset and "Optical Line
Interface" that is supposed to have better line noise-handling capabilities.
They're selling these direct for $299 for a Mac setup. Is this the same
chipset
that Practical Peripheral used in their (now discontinued) 14400FXSA?
Does anyone out there have any experience with either of these two?
I should say that I now have a Supra v.32bis modem, but I've been having tons
of trouble connecting to my school's system (they're running Fastcom FDX 9696)
so much in fact that I've gotten sick of dialing 10-20 times just to get a
connection. I've read the reports of modems that cover Zyxel, Supra, etc...
but
no mention of these two modems.
Please reply to me directly, and I'll summarize if I get enough good info.
Thanks!

If my memory still serves me well, both Ataris and Amigas have specialized
built-in hardware that allows them to do that. In the Atari, this was
provided about 4-5 years ago, and I believe it was called the "Blitter"
chip.

Well, a Bozo is what I felt like after shelling out $800 to get an Atari ST
about 5 years ago, thinking that I'd got a real bargain, only to give up
in frustration trying to find software without bugs, or even simple things
as hard drives and memory upgrades. I'm sure things have improved since
then, but that convinced me you get what you pay for. (I know, bad grammar).
The point here is that you always have to compromise, and so do the hardware
designers. Oh, well...

Quark XPress doesn't look for the system version, but for the
keyboard and(/or) date/time routines selected at startup. This
means you have to run the keyboard resources of the same
version as is hard-wired into the QXP version you bought, which
is a real pain if you use as many international key layouts as
I do! Of course this violates Apple's guidelines about inter-
national support, not to mention WorldScript.

Subject: CPU questions
After investigating the Connectix Powerbook Utilities demo, I have
some questions regarding its power management feature. It seems to
have the ability to display the battery time remaining, but I could
not find how to configure that feature. For example, if I have two
batteries, can I have different statistics for each battery? Or is
there a way to zap the statistics of a specific battery?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: DMA SCSI...
Mel Martinez of The John Hopkins University wonders if the DMA SCSI will
work on other SCSI cards, I don't know for sure. It just reminds me on the
Mac IIfx, DMA SCSI was implemented in the hardware, but the Mac OS cannot
take advantage of it because the SCSI Manager was written without DMA in
mind.
As a matter of fact, the SCSI of IIfx is much slower than what you expect
>From a 40MHz CPU. But when you run AU/X 2.0 ( announced in the same product
launch ), the throughput out-perform Mac OS because it can use DMA!
The high end server just announced by Apple will come bundled with AU/X
and a special version of AppleShare. It may have to do with the lack of DMA
capability in Mac OS.
There's also rumors/vaporware that the SCSI Manager was re-written from
scratch. If it is true, can we expect a performance boost in older
machines? Or it is just for the new machines with faster SCSI controller
chip.

The best way is to install from external hard drive, which will also allow
you to install System 7.1, which is what you should do if you're going to
go to the trouble anyhow.
The other answer is that you just install System 7.0 from the 800K disk
set. There is nothing in 7.0.1 that is needed on a Mac II. System 7.0
(with Tune-Up) is just fine.

Dear Netters,
A faculty member here is experiencing problems with his almost year
old Deskwriter C. He estimates printing approximately 100 prints in
the past year and has gone through 4 ink cartridges. After making
a very few prints with each cartridge, he begins getting the error
message "Print Cartridge Not Properly Connected", and the document
prints with horizontal stripes where no ink has been deposited on
the page.
Has anyone else experienced these problems, and/or can anyone
offer a solution?

Subject: Hypercard help needed (Q)
Hi!
You guys/gals are great! Where else can one find such a wealth
of information? <brown nosing off>
I need to know how to delete a line in a Hypercard field. When
I say line, I mean the whole line, not just the text. I can
blow the text away, but the blank line still remains. I'm
looking for an easier way than:
repeat with x = curline to maxline
put line x into line (x-1)
end repeat
That's probably not exactly correct; I don't have my handy-dandy
reference manual with me. This method of moving every subsequent
line up seems to be rather poor, there has to be a better way.
Can you delete the <return> in a field line?
Any help would be appreciated,
Chuck

Sometimes ago I posted a question asking about the PowerCache and the Mac

I haven't received any answer, but I have purchased the card, and here are the

I didn't had any problem with the socket installation although I send the

The user manual about the installation is very clear, with a lot of good

And the DayStar technicall support is very good, and they offer an upgrade

Subject: Weird font kerning (PostScript printing?) problem
This was meant to be a crossposting with comp.sys.mac.system, but I think
I hit the wrong key yesterday because my Digest posting didn't make it!
We had been having a weird problem with printing from our Quadra to a
standard Apple Laserwriter II. All the kerning in the output, whether
printed from Microsoft Word or other apps, was wrong - underlines shot out
beyond what they were meant to underline, justified text was patently jagged,
and even the columns in the font samples produced by the Laserwriter Utility
were badly aligned (the Helvetica font used for the font names had somehow
got slightly condensed!). Our documents would print fine from any other Mac,
but would not print correctly to any PostScript printer from ours. I could
not see why this was happening - our fonts were all the standard Apple ones
which are also in the printer's ROMs, and we had hardly any TrueType fonts
in our System. Playing with the various Page Setup options made no
difference.
Perseverance confirmed that there was our Mac's PostScript output was
behaving strangely. Printing a document straight to the printer produced
the kerning problem; printing to a PostScript file and then downloading to
the printer produced output which only had Times Bold and no other fonts,
though the original doc had several variants of Times!
Reinstalling the Laserwriter driver didn't help, so I eventually reinstalled
the System, and this cured the problem. The problem see
